Jewellery Buying Guide

Choosing fine jewellery is easier when you know what to look for. This guide explains diamond quality, gold karats, ring sizes and everyday care in plain language.

Diamonds: the 4Cs

  • Cut — how well a diamond is shaped and polished. A good cut returns more light, which is what makes a diamond sparkle.
  • Colour — graded from D (colourless) to Z (light yellow). Near-colourless stones look bright white in white gold; warmer stones can look lovely in yellow gold.
  • Clarity — how free a stone is from tiny natural marks, from FL (flawless) to I (included). Many marks cannot be seen without magnification.
  • Carat — the weight of a diamond (1 carat = 0.2 g). Our product pages show the total diamond weight of each piece in carats (ct).

If a diamond comes with an independent grading report, the report number can be checked on the laboratory’s own website. Ask our team about the details of any piece.

Gold karats

Karat (K) tells you how much pure gold is in the metal. The rest is a mix of other metals that adds strength and colour.

24K
99.9% gold

Pure gold. Very soft, so it is mostly used for bullion and coins.

22K
91.6% gold

Rich colour and soft; popular for traditional plain-gold jewellery.

18K
75.0% gold

Strong enough to hold diamonds and gemstones securely. Our collection is made in 18K gold.

14K
58.5% gold

Harder and more affordable, with a paler colour.

Yellow, white and rose gold are all real gold. The colour comes from the other metals in the alloy: copper gives rose gold its warmth, while white gold is alloyed with white metals and often finished with a bright plating.

Finding your ring size

Measure the inside diameter of a ring that fits you well and compare it with this chart. Measure at the end of the day, when fingers are slightly larger, and go up half a size for wide bands.

Caring for your jewellery

  • Put jewellery on after perfume, lotion and hairspray, and take it off for swimming, the gym and housework.
  • Clean gently with warm water, a drop of mild soap and a soft brush, then dry with a soft cloth.
  • Store pieces separately so diamonds do not scratch other jewellery.
  • Have settings checked from time to time, especially on rings you wear every day.
